Our founder, Lucy Morris, was affected by suicide at a young age: Both her cousin and grandfather died by suicide. Since then, she has had a heart for those struggling with mental illness. Lucy founded this project as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award during her junior year of high school to bring attention to teen suicide and the mental health crisis in high schools.
To this day, our mission is to encourage others to Be The Light in the darkness of mental illness.
- LUCY MORRIS, FOUNDER
"I was only 7 years old when my cousin committed suicide. He was like an older brother to me, and I was heartbroken. I didn't understand how such a happy person could've hurt so much. Additionally, I grew up hearing stories of my Grandpa Ted who died by suicide years before. As I grew up, I became increasingly aware of the sadness and hurt in the world and how people were doing very little about it. Once I got into high school, I believed that the issue of suicide could no longer be ignored; that is when I decided to make it the focus of my Girl Scout Gold Award Project. I believe that everyone can prevent suicide by talking to those who are struggling and removing the stigma surrounding the mental health conversation.
